Whether you already live in Toronto or you’re moving to town, there’s a few things you should know about Canada’s biggest city. And to help you out with exactly that, we’ve compiled a list of 10 awesome things you should definitely know about Toronto!
1. It’s (arguably) the most multicultural city in the world. More than 50% of people who call Toronto home were not born in Canada. Pretty cool, right?
2. It’s also really big. Toronto proper might only have 2.5 million residents, but the GTA’s packed with over 5.5 million – and there’s less and less separation between the cities across the GTA these days.
3. And, it’s pretty pricey. Generally Vancouver gets the nod for having the highest rents in Canada, but Torontonians would argue otherwise.
4. There are no less than six Chinatowns in Toronto. That is a lot of dim sum.
5. The Caribana Festival is the biggest of its kind in Canada, and almost as big as Mardi Gras, but come on, Mardi Gras is massive.
6. Often, movies that are set in New York are filmed in Toronto. Probably because it’s cheaper.
7. Torontonians kind of hate Starbucks. Thank the hipsters, but independent cafes are way more popular. (We swear, the lineup at the local Starbucks is for the bathroom…)
8. There’s a huge underground walkway called the PATH that goes on for 30 kilometres. Why underground? Wait until winter, you’ll understand.
9. Toronto has a thing about brunch. Everyone loves it and you will learn to love it, too.
10. It’s pretty much the best city in the world, and also happens to be the centre of the universe. And if anyone tries to tell you otherwise, you can tell them where to stick it.
There you have it. All in all, Toronto is awesome in these 10 ways, plus hundreds of others you’ll soon discover. Comment! Discuss, people!
