In a city that’s full of truly amazing and talented artists, from super famous (Drake) to underground, it’s difficult to keep up and to find a style that suits you. Whether it is music, visual arts, theatre, or dance, Toronto has a lot to offer. Get your fill of local Toronto talents with these three artists we highly recommend.
- Duane Forrest
While not new to the Toronto music scene, Duane is definitely a treat to hear live. His music is eclectic with various influences: soul, reggae, jazz and folk. With influences that include Billie Holiday, Bob Marely, Norah Jones, Nat King Cole, and Jack Johnson, his voice, melodies and lyrics are warm, loving, organic, and filled with sincerity and soul. Whether you like to go see Toronto music live or you prefer enjoying it the comfort of your home, Duane Forrest should be on your list. His music can be found on CBC music, iTunes, SoundCloud, and YouTube. Plus, the guy donates a third of his profits to a non-profit organization he founded called Genesis Community of the Arts, an organization that provides marginalized children around the world with the opportunity to explore various forms of artistic expression.
2. Amai Kuda
Amai Kuda’s voice is utterly captivating and versatile. Her music is a mix of R&B, African rhythms, jazz, blues, soul and something that can only be called an x-factor that mesmerizes any listener. She has a beautiful voice, incredible vocal control… and she can rap! If you like Erykah Badu, Nneka, or Amel Larrieux, you’lll want Amai Kuda’s music in your life. She can be found on CBC music, iTunes, Amazon and YouTube. She is also heavily involved in social justice and is a co-founder and co-director of three organizations dealing with African peoples decolonization and indigenous solidarity.
3. Shi Wisdom

Shi is a force to be reckoned with, and one to watch out for if you don’t know her already. She has worked with Drake, and was one of the writers for Rita Ora’s song RIP. Aside from working with big names in the industry, her own music is worth a listen. She can do the sweet soft vocals, the unusual strong breaks and has the hood vibe down (better than Drake). She is classified as an R&B/soul artist but this does an injustice to her versatility. Her album, particularly the single “Young Gunner” ft. Nevon, which was released earlier this year, can hardly be classified as classic R&B/soul. You can find her music on her website, iTunes and YouTube.
