Whether you work from home or not, having a desk in your apartment is perfect for storing files and for those hours you log on Facebook every week. Desks shouldn’t look terrible, though, so this Ikea hack not only looks great AND has storage, but it’s also on casters so it’s easy to move around.
1. The parts. You’ll need
- Rast 3 drawer chest – $39.99
- A slab of wood that’s 24″ deep and as long as you want your desk to be, try Linmon table top, cut to size – $33.99
- Lalle table legs x2 – $15.00 each
- Two scrap 2x4s, 23″ long
- Caster wheels x6
- Drawer pulls x3, try Lansa – $14.99 per 2-pack
- A quart of white paint
- Gold spray paint
- Paint brush
- Painter’s tape
- Hole filler
- Sandpaper
- Screws
- Drill
- Saw
2. Do it.
I. Spray paint the legs, the drawer pulls and the casters by taping off the wheel part and spraying the metal portion. Next, assemble the Rast dresser, then flip it over and screw the 2x4s to the underside, flush with the insides of the base of the dresser, so the dresser doesn’t become any taller. The casters get screwed into these boards.
II. Now fill in the holes for the knobs that come with the dresser and sand the area smooth when the filler is dry. Meanwhile, you can attach four casters to the base of the dresser, where you installed the 2x4s. Attach the other two casters to the base of the two legs.
III. Next, paint the dresser unit. While it dries, screw the legs into the underside of the table top, then attach the table top to the top of the Rast dresser, so the drawers of the dresser are facing outward. Lastly, attach the drawer pulls to the drawers, and you’re done!
