Kitchens. We love ’em and we hate ’em. We spend a ton of time in there, but too often, we’re stuck with tiny kitchens that just don’t have enough space for the blender, coffee maker, juicer, toaster, microwave and the Slap Chop.
Today’s Ikea Hack will not only get you convenient, moveable kitchen counter space, but also storage, thanks to its handy middle shelf, in the form of a kitchen island. Paint it to add a pop of colour to your kitchen.
- The parts. You’ll need
- Lack side tables x 2 – currently on sale for $9.99 each
- Maple butcher block, 24″x24″ – about $80
- Wood glue or strong double-sided adhesive
- Paint
- Do it. First, decide what colour to paint your kitchen island. The original blog has it in fire engine red, but you could opt for a teal, grey, pink, yellow, or whatever your little heart desires. Paint the entirety of both Lack tables, then let dry.
The next step is to attach the Lack tables together. Stack one on top of the other, legs to tabletop, and ensure that everything lines up perfectly. Mark out where the corners of the legs should go on the bottom table’s tabletop, and use the wood glue or double-sided adhesive to stick the legs into place.
Finally, mark out the perfect alignment for the butcher block on the top table, then use the wood glue or adhesive to attach it firmly. Let everything set and/or dry before you use it.
The shelf made by the bottom table top is perfect kitchen storage and the butcher block is great as additional space for prepping and serving food!
