Awesome Ikea Hack of the Week: A mid-century modern sideboard with storage and style

Our cheap and easy Ikea hacks for February continues this week to help you add storage to your Toronto apartment on a budget, all while adding style to make your rental feel more like home. Today’s hack uses a bookcase flipped on its side and transforms it onto a sideboard with legs and sexy wooden touches.

The parts. You’ll need

Do it.

  • Flip the shelving unit on its side. Cut the plyboard or have it cut at a hardware store to cover the entire outside edge of the shelving unit (not the front or back, though) as well as pieces to line three or all of the sections, as per your preference. Sand the edges and stain the plyboard. When it’s dry, fasten it to the outsides and the sections of the unit with glue and clamp the pieces together (or use heavy objects) until it dries.
  • Next, attach the legs. You’ll want to cut the Ikea Hilver legs down to about 6″ tall or less, depending on your preference. Stain the legs and when they dry, attach them to the bottom side of the unit using the brackets they came with, about 2″ in from each edge.
