Awesome Ikea Hack of the Week: Floating Shelving Unit

In Toronto apartments, storage is a rare find. Problem is, in our small spaces, adding storage often means adding furniture, which can result in making our apartments feel even smaller.

Enter today’s Ikea Hack, which adds storage without making your apartment feel smaller. Floating shelves look great and they’re easy to remove if you ever have to move. Here’s how to make it.

  1. The parts. You’ll need

    First, start by painting the brackets and/or shelves with paint, stain or lacquer and let dry. Next, lay out the brackets for installation. The blogger who came up with the design got fancy and had the brackets on alternating shelves, alternate between the front and the back of the unit, and painted each bracket a different colour. You could do the same, or keep all the brackets on the front or back of the shelf. Screw two brackets to the underside of each shelf except one, which will be the base. Then, screw them into the backs of the shelves they’ll attach to.

That was easy! All that’s left is to install it on a wall in your apartment, and we recommend a simple L bracket so it doesn’t fall over.
