We often think of our apartment as a relaxing, comfortable place where we can unwind and rest after a long day, but what if our homes were actually stressing us out more than we think? Being mentally comfortable as well as physically comfortable in your own home is a big deal.
Here are some ways you can be sure to be at peace with your pad.
Clean up clutter and mess
A messy home can strongly affect your mental state. The brain likes simplicity and cleanliness, so when you have books and clothes and papers scattered everywhere, it’s hard for your mind not to be distracted. It’s important to clean up the clutter to properly help your brain relax!
Try to get some natural light
Lots of natural light is an immediate mood-booster. Everyone needs vitamin D and most of us don’t get enough of it (working all day at an office job is a killer), so open up those windows and get the sun shining through as much as possible! The more bright and welcoming your apartment becomes, the more comfortable and healthy you’ll feel.
Organize, organize, organize!
Try your best to put things, whether it is smaller items like books and decorations to larger objects like furniture and art, in logical, convenient places. By giving everything a ‘home’ in your house, you allow your brain to think about other things and not about where you put your keys last night. The outside world is a direct representation of how our inner world works, and vice versa! If you control one, you can control the other, and reap all the benefits that entails.
Don’t forget about colours!
Having a colour scheme for your apartment is also another way to significantly change your mood. Studies have found that certain colours have tangible emotional effects on peoples’ wellbeing, so why not leverage it as much as you can? Blue is associated with calmness and tranquility and green is associated with creativity and nature. Yellow can give you a bright, cheerful feeling. Experiment!
It’s important to recognize that our external world speaks volumes about what we think and how we feel, so it’s important to take care of our apartments! Just imagine it being a houseplant – every now and then, it needs to get watered. The more you care for your apartment, the more it’ll care for you.
