Live your own Wayne’s World dream by living on Mike Myers Drive in Scarborough

It’s no secret that one of the best SNL sketches of all time was inspired by comedy superhero Mike Myers’ time growing up in Scarborough. Now, you can celebrate your love for Wayne, Austin Powers, Dr. Evil and Shrek by living on Mike Myers Drive.

The street is located in Scarborough, in a neighbourhood not far from where Myers grew up. It’s a winding drive off Kennedy Road near Lawrence Avenue East. On one side of the road is a park and on the other, nice three-storey townhouses with garages.

The street got its name in 2002 and at the time, some realtors were appalled at the idea of giving such a name to a street in a neighbourhood.

In 2014, three-bedroom townhouses on Mike Myers Drive were selling for just under $500,000.

Ahh… home sweet Scarborough.

Mike Myers’ parents Eric and Alice immigrated to Canada and raised Mike and his two older brothers in Scarborough. Mike Myers began acting in commercials at the age of two. He went to school at Sir John A. MacDonald Collegiate Institute and Stephen Leacock Collegiate Institute, both of which are in Scarborough.

Wayne Campbell, the lead character on Wayne’s World, started getting traction in the early 1980s, and it’s pretty well known that Wayne’s character and life is based on Myers’ own, and became a favourite sketch on Saturday Night Live later in the 80s.

Throwback time.

The first Wayne’s World Movie was released in 1992, and was a major hit. It continues to inspire easy-to-slap-together Halloween costumes to this day.

Next, he starred in So I Married an Axe Murderer, which still has a cult following, though most people might not know its characters are all, also, based on people Myers knew while growing up in Scarborough.

Then, there was the Austin Powers trilogy which kicked off in 1997, and the first of which, at least, is just plain pee-your-pants-laughing amazing.

Myers is also the voice of Shrek which turned into five movies if you count Shrek the Halls and Shrek Forever After, as well as a pretty nicely done ride at Universal Studios called Shrek 4-D (the lineup is preposterous, but kind of worth it, actually).

Random Mike Myers fact: He’s a rabid Dungeons and Dragons fan.

Erin Cardone: Born on the Prairies, Erin Cardone grew up knowing there was more to life than canola fields and AAA Alberta Angus. So she escaped, living in Europe and Australia, white-knuckling it through plates of calf brains and raw horse meat, and learning languages she can't remember anymore. After a stint as a jaded, skeptical journalist, she changed tack and began writing rather awesome blogs and showing businesses that advertising is dead, so long live social media, with her businesses Legendary Social Media. She now splits her time between various Canadian cities, Costa Rica and wherever else the wind blows.
