Mercer names Toronto one of the world’s best cities to live in yet again

Well we’ve all known it for years, but now the world does too – Toronto is one of the best cities to live in.

Mercer, one of the biggest HR consultancy firms on the planet, just released it Quality of Living Index that ranks 450 cities on these criteria to determine which are the best to live in:

  • political and social environment
  • economic environment
  • socio-cultural environment (media availability, personal freedom)
  • medical and health considerations
  • schools and education
  • public services and transportation
  • recreation
  • availability of consumer goods (food, cars)
  • housing (rentals, etc.)
  • natural environment

In the end, the big winner across all categories was Vienna, Austria. But Toronto wasn’t far behind in 15th place, to tie with Melbourne, Australia. TO beat out Montreal (23rd) and Ottawa (17th), but placed behind Vancouver (5th).

Toronto scored points for safety, schools and access to services like recreation and good quality food, but our city’s traffic congestion and cold winters didn’t help advance us in the rankings.

No U.S. cities made it into the list’s top 50 spots!

Check out this report on the top 23 cities from the list, including Toronto, for yourself.

So she escaped, living in Europe and Australia, white-knuckling it through plates of calf brains and raw horse meat, and learning languages she can't remember anymore. After a stint as a jaded, skeptical journalist, she changed tack and began writing rather awesome blogs and showing businesses that advertising is dead, so long live social media, with her businesses Legendary Social Media. She now splits her time between various Canadian cities, Costa Rica and wherever else the wind blows.
