The best ways to prevent design disasters in your Toronto apartment

Sometimes we get ideas that seem great in theory, but don’t really work out like we imagined.

Maybe you dreamed of cherry red walls that looked rather pink in the light of your Toronto apartment, or maybe you excitedly bought a wagon-wheel coffee table that really didn’t mesh with your industrialist decor.

Decorating mishaps can be expensive and time-consuming, so here are some recommendations to keep in mind whenever you’re considering redecorating:

Double, triple, quadruple and quintuple check to see if the paint is right

One of the biggest disasters in decorating is painting a room a wrong colour. Luckily, it’s also one of the easiest to prevent: with meticulous planning and with small patches painted at a time, you can prevent your room from turning into a nightmare unintentionally. Just remember that paint always looks a little bit different when it’s on the wall, so try your best to plan for it!

Buying something expensive that’s too big for your space

The biggest culprit here are beds and couches, and these can absolutely dominate any space in a very bad way. It’s really important to always measure every centimetre to get an accurate representation of what can realistically fit into your space. Not only that, but some things might just feel too big. Just because it feels great in the store, doesn’t mean it’ll fit great in your apartment!

Getting terrible hand-me-downs

Maybe your brother went to China and found some tacky statues, or maybe your grandmother cross-stitched some art for you, but whatever the case may be, you know for certain that it won’t look good in your apartment. The most important thing to keep in mind is the fact that you have to live with your decorations every day and they don’t – if you aren’t able to politely decline, see if you can give them to someone else. Just because they were gifts, doesn’t mean that it’s any benefit to your mental wellbeing if they don’t jive with your style.

Don’t listen to other people!

It’s your house! You’re the one living in it! Just because people may have suggestions on how to decorate doesn’t mean that their word is law. Take anything you like from what they say, but be sure to put your own spin on it. The more personalized your pad is, the more likely it is that you’ll love it!
