What’s with ‘doing brunch’ in Toronto?

The rumours of “unbrunching” are grossly exaggerated. Brunch would be the national pastime of Toronto, were Toronto a nation. Or is it? Either way, doing brunch is essentially a must for any good Torontonian – it’s something we learned at birth, like an instinct, or it was instilled upon our psyche upon our arrival in Toronto.

Why do Torontonians love doing brunch so much?

Several reasons (we know you’ll have your own, definitely share those in the comments section!):

  • The brunch spots are unreal. Seriously, they’re so good. Smoked salmon, steak and eggs, grilled cheese stuffed with pears, red velvet pancakes, pulled pork…
  • It’s like a social outing. When everyone goes for brunch, you get to see everyone – some are regulars at your local spot, some are new faces. Either way, the morning crowd is always a diverse one and makes for top shelf people-watching.
  • Plus, brunch is for catching up with friends. It’s for friends you went out with last night, and some times, for friends you haven’t seen in ages. And it gives you the perfect setting to chat and laugh and catch up. For hours.
  • It’s the ultimate hangover cure. No one knows how, but eggs and Caesars are the key to anti-hangover success.
  • It’s about spurning the norm. You say I can’t have scrambled eggs at 2 pm, but brunch says I can.
  • If you eat brunch, you probably won’t have to eat again that day. But you still will.

Over to you, friends. Why do you brunch? Or are you currently unbrunching?
